In a recent public rally in North Malda, Prime Minister Narendra Modi made a promise that could potentially uplift the economic status of the region’s farmers. He proposed the establishment of a food processing industry to enhance the income of the local farmers, who are renowned for their world-class mangoes and ‘makhana’.
“Farmers in Malda are known for their mangoes and ‘makhana’, which have earned worldwide fame. We aim to increase the income of these farmers by setting up a food processing industry in this region,” PM Modi declared to the gathering.
The proposed food processing industry is expected to augment the value of these agricultural products and provide a direct market for the farmers. This would eliminate the role of middlemen, ensuring that the farmers get a fair price for their produce.
However, the announcement was met with demands from the Trinamool Congress (TMC). “TMC demands their share in that also,” PM Modi mentioned, without going into the specifics of these demands.
This announcement has stirred a new political debate in the region. As the farmers look forward to more details on this initiative, it is anticipated that the political scenario in North Malda will witness significant shifts.
