BENGALURU – In a recent development, Karnataka Governor Thawarchand Gehlot announced the construction of a tunnel road in Bengaluru. This initiative is aimed at reducing the traffic congestion in the Bengaluru Metropolitan area.
In his customary address to both Houses of Legislature at the beginning of the budget session, Gehlot stated that a feasibility report is being prepared for the construction of the tunnel road within the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) limits.
The Governor highlighted various developmental projects being undertaken by the government in the state capital. Among these, the Bengaluru Metro Rail Project Phase-2A from Central Silk Board to Krishnarajapuram (19.75 km) and Phase-2B Krishnarajapuram to Kempegowda International Airport works are under progress and have been planned to be completed by June 2026.
He also mentioned the Cauvery Water Supply Phase-5, which will supply an additional 775 Million Litres per Day (MLD) of drinking water to 110 village areas included in the BBMP. This project is intended to be commissioned in March this year.
The Bengaluru Suburban Railway Project, taken up in collaboration with the Government of Karnataka and the Railway Departments, is another significant initiative. Civil works of the Baiyappanahalli-Chikkabanavara (25 km) corridor in this project have started. The tender for civil works on the Heelalige–Rajanukunte (46.24 km) corridor has been finalised, and the work will begin soon.
However, the opposition BJP in Karnataka accused the Congress government of making Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot “speak lies” in his customary address. The political dynamics surrounding this development remain to be seen.
This announcement of the tunnel road construction is a promising step towards solving the traffic woes of Bengaluru, a city known for its bustling IT industry and infamous traffic congestion. As the city continues to grow, such infrastructural developments are crucial to ensure smooth commuting and overall urban development.
