Karnataka’s Guarantee Schemes: A Beacon of Hope for 1.2 Crore Families

In a recent address to the joint session of both Houses of the Karnataka Assembly, Governor Thawar Chand Gehlot announced that the implementation of the five guarantee schemes in Karnataka will lift 1.2 crore families out of poverty. This initiative, he noted, has provided a ‘new boost to the economy’.

The Five Guarantee Schemes

The Congress government’s five guarantee schemes are as follows:

  • Gruha Jyoti: 200 units of free power to all households.
  • Gruha Lakshmi: Rs 2,000 monthly assistance to the woman head of every family.
  • Anna Bhagya: Payment of cash in lieu of the additional 5 kg of rice to every member of a BPL household.
  • YuvaNidhi: Rs 3,000 every month for unemployed graduate youth and Rs 1,500 for unemployed diploma holders (both in the age group of 18-25) for two years.
  • Shakti: Free travel for women in public transport buses.

Impact on the Economy

Governor Gehlot emphasized that these schemes have not only provided a lifeline for economically disadvantaged families but also stimulated economic activities. The increase in purchasing power among the people due to these guarantee schemes has led to an uptick in tax collection. As of January end, the growth rate in GST collection of Karnataka stands first in the country.

A Global Record

Governor Gehlot highlighted that “more than five crore people of the State will be promoted to middle-class status by this one decision”. He added that universal basic income is being implemented by the Government, leading to significant changes. Despite drought in the state, farmer suicides are less than last year.

A Call for Fair Share

Governor Gehlot also pointed out that while Karnataka ranks second among the states that collect the highest tax in the country, it is ranked tenth in terms of receipt of tax share. He stressed that the government is making “every effort to get due share in a rightful and justifiable manner”.

This initiative by the Karnataka government is a significant step towards alleviating poverty and promoting economic growth. It serves as a testament to the power of well-implemented social welfare schemes in transforming lives and boosting the economy.
