Former Karnataka Chief Minister and BJP MP Basavaraj Bommai has lauded the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, calling it one of the most progressive pieces of legislation aimed at benefiting the minority Muslim community. Bommai’s comments underscore the government’s commitment to addressing community welfare and property management issues associated with Waqf properties.
Bommai described the bill as a significant step forward, stating, “This is one of the most progressive bills which will take care of the minority Muslim community a great deal and save their properties. Moreover, all the proceeds of the Waqf should go to women and children.” His remarks emphasize the bill’s potential to enhance the management and utilization of Waqf properties for the benefit of women and children within the community.
The former Chief Minister also criticized the opposition for attempting to obstruct the bill’s progress. “For different reasons including the vote bank, the opposition tried to stall it,” Bommai said, suggesting that political motives rather than genuine concerns are behind the opposition’s stance. He reaffirmed the government’s clear intentions, stating, “Our government’s intentions are very clear to do good for minorities.”
Bommai highlighted that the bill draws from the recommendations of the Sachar Committee and the Rehman Khan Joint Parliamentary Committee, which were established by the Congress. “This is drawn from the Sachar Committee and the Rehman Khan Joint Parliamentary Committee, which was formed by Congress and the recommendations are being implemented,” he explained. He accused the Congress of disowning their own policies, pointing to a broader pattern of political inconsistency.
The Waqf (Amendment) Bill has sparked significant debate, with discussions focusing on its implications for property management and community welfare. Bommai’s support reinforces the government’s perspective on the bill as a tool for progressive reform and effective community support.
