In a recent meeting convened to discuss the proposed Brand Bengaluru policy, BJP MLAs from Bengaluru voiced strong demands for the immediate release of development grants for their constituencies. The meeting, led by Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar, was aimed at reviewing various city development projects, including the much-discussed tunnel road and skydeck initiatives.
According to sources within the BJP, the party’s legislators requested the state government to expedite the allocation of funds necessary for development activities in their respective areas. “We have pressed the Minister to release the development grants,” one BJP MLA told The Hindu. “While the Minister assured that some funds would be allocated, he did not provide specific details regarding the total volume of funds. We estimate that at least ₹40 crore is needed for various development projects.”
The meeting was primarily focused on the array of projects proposed under the Brand Bengaluru policy. Shivakumar presented updates on several high-profile initiatives, including the proposed tunnel road and skydeck, which have been widely covered in the media. The meeting provided an opportunity for MLAs from various parties to offer their suggestions and feedback on these projects.
Despite the productive discussion on development projects, BJP MLAs expressed disappointment over the lack of discussion regarding the Greater Bengaluru Governance Bill 2024. The Bill, considered a key piece of legislation for the city’s governance, was expected to be a significant topic of conversation. However, Shivakumar informed the attendees that the Bill had been referred to a joint committee, which includes members from both the Congress and BJP parties. He indicated a willingness to consider suggestions and make necessary adjustments, but the Bill was not discussed in detail during the meeting.
The BJP MLAs’ call for immediate funding and their dissatisfaction with the handling of the Greater Bengaluru Governance Bill highlight ongoing tensions and priorities as Bengaluru navigates its urban development challenges. The response from the state government on these issues will likely influence the city’s developmental trajectory and the effectiveness of proposed infrastructure projects.
